I stayed home in The Netherlands however followed my team members coach Wally, Capsle and Vera very closely. All 3 of them managed to advanced to the semis! Among the strong competitors, only Vera made it to the finals.
This event was broadcasted live over the internet! I witnessed the finals in the evening and took some screenshots.
The final results are tweeted before though but I’ll repeat it again here.
Casper ten Sijthoff: 12th
Wouter Jongeneelen: 9th
Vera Zijlstra: 5th

I’m back in The Netherlands for a week now and our weather doesn’t differ much from England. It was a learning curve during training camp and it was awesome to get to know my team mates better.
I have taken some rest and meanwhile I selected a few photos that I want to share with you. Some of the photos are just superb for its scenery. Other photos simply don’t need a description.
In the morning I wake up at 8.30 AM. I realize that I am sore. I don’t feel sore in my arms or back but sore on my bottom because I fell off a skateboard. Capsle wakes up and is heading off for breakfast. I get up as well and start changing clothes. In the hallway I smell cat food again. I can’t resist that smell anymore and I’m glad this is the final day that we are here.
In the kitchen I see my team mates enjoying their breakfast. Some share a comment about my webpage updates. It is my page and I may publish what I want. In my view it is my virtual freedom. I tell them that they are not up to date and I published 2 new online updates. Meanwhile I eat a few slices of bread with some yorkham and drink tea with forest fruit flavor.
After breakfast we are packing our rucksacks and suitcases. We are leaving at 9.30 AM to Leeds. I walk to the living room to get my notebook and adapter. Everyone is busy packing. While I pack my bag I hear a vacuum cleaner in the background. We are cleaning up the place well before leaving. I tidy my bed and leave my room. When I get outdoors, I realise I am the last person who lef the house. All bags were stuffed in the cars. It was time to re stuff the cars and we manage to fit all the bags including mine and drive off to Leeds.
When we arrive at Leeds, we are somewhere downtown. We drive in circles however we don’t spot a climbing gym. It turns out that coach Wally set the wrong address in his navigation system. Using the correct address we try to find the climbing gym again. It was no problem because the gym was only 10 minutes away from our current position.
Our plan for today was to climb routes at The Leeds Wall. I felt like climbing. We rented a few harnesses , climbing materials and ropes. The harness didn’t fit well but the colors look neat.
In my view the routes were a tad easy. The routes were set simple and didn’t need much fantasy to figure the sequence. Too bad but it was nice to climb some routes. I didn’t feel pumped at all however I felt a bit tired.
I have some time left and check out the climbing shop for interesting bargains. I still have a few pounds left and spend it on a book. Jerry Moffatt – Revelations, I haven’t read this book yet so it was nice to have it. By the way, I have the last sample and that felt good.
We had some lunch together at the gym and left to the airport. We handed in our car keys and after checking in we had to wait for another hour at the airport.
I took a nap during the flight. We arrived safely at Schiphol and I say goodbye to my team mates. I shake hands with everyone and catch them come Sunday or next week.
I received a few compliments about my webpage updates. It’s always nice to have hardcore fans I suppose.
I decide to have dinner at Schiphol and coach Wally, Vera and Freddie decide to join me. I feel like having a healthy dinner however we end up in line at Burger King. I try to enjoy my meal but Vera mentions that I have one minute left to catch the train. I get up and run after Vera with a large coke and fries in my hands. Our train left on time. We will wait for the next train to arrive. At Utrecht we will split up and both head home. It feels good to be home again.
I was sleeping in bed and heard Capsle waking up early. We were able to sleep late today because we were leaving at 11.15 AM. I felt a bit tired and realized I probably didn’t sleep enough. I decide to take a hot shower before I get some breakfast. It was nice!
My breakfast is a few slices of bread with chocolate spread. I differ it with some slices of bread with ham and drink another glass of juice. The weather looks good however we are going to train indoors.
This time we are not going to Climbing Works again but to City Bloc at Leeds. We are going to meet the Austrian team to climb together.
When we arrive at Leeds, I notice that we are in a small climbing center. The building is big and it contains more than just climbing walls. They also have a wicked skate area!
Casper, Nicky, Michiel, Wouter and me are trying to pull some stunts. We suck at it and return to the climbing gym.
The walls look nice and the boulders are fun. Meanwhile the Austrian team has arrived. They are joining us. After climbing some boulders my skin on my fingers are getting sensitive.
A few hours later we quit climbing and have lunch outdoors. The Austrian team is heading off to the second climbing center in Leeds. I run along their cars and shoot some photo’s. Coach Wally is asking for an address confirmation for the other climbing center. They act tough and drive off with their Volkswagen stations.
The second climbing center at Leeds is The Depot climbing center. It is a bigger gym than City Bloc and they also have an amazing roof.
I feel empty however I still want to train in the roof. I change my clothes and put on my climbing shoes. When I’m at the roof I am astonished of the roof.
Fred, Channah, Nikki, Nicky, Wouter, Vera and me are climbing one by one in the roof. Casper is bouldering and Michiel decided to take it easy at the climbing shop. 6 routes in the roof is enough and I quit climbing for today. I try to save some energy for Friday.
In the evening we went out for dinner. It was late and there was no time for doing groceries and cooking. That would take hours. 20 meters away we found ourselves an Italian restaurant.
When we were ordering I decided to get a nice group photo. Everyone said “No” however I still convinced them to laugh! I had some fine pollo cacciatore and rate this restaurant an 8. Good service, quickly served dinner and we had nice entrée on the house.
Today I felt like sleeping late but I had to get up. At 8.30 AM my alarm went off and I fixed breakfast. The weather wasn’t good today however the weather in The Netherlands was way better. Anyway, I am having breakfast and it is the same as yesterday. Toast with ham, yogurt with muesli and I get myself some juice. I pour a full glass of juice because it contains vitamin c and that’s good for my body.
Our planning is being adjusted day by day. It is raining and therefore we can’t climb outdoors. We are heading off to Climbing Works to climb indoors.
Coach Wally shares us that we are conducting a competition simulation. Meanwhile we can warm up and he will make up 4 competition boulders for the men’s and women’s.
Before we start the competition, coach Wally mentions that we will be recorded. I have to pick a boulder and visualize it over and over. In the corner of my eye I spot a tripod with a video cam. Suddenly I see Freddie grabbing his iphone out of his pocket and Channah is pulling out her camera as well. They are recording us and tonight we will analyze it. It were 4 fun boulders and I have the feeling that I had a good training.
On our way home, we make a stop at Curry’s, an electronics shop. Coach Wally forgot his AV cable to hook up the cam on the tv. Freddie runs into an xbox and starts playing. Casper and Nikki found themselves a foot massage machine and put their hands on it. I walk through this ship and get myself a nice computer game. The Euro has nice advantages so it is cheaper. Eventually coach Wally didn’t find what he wanted to have and we are heading off home to eat lunch.
After lunch coach Wally asks us if we still have energy to climb. Nikki, Vera, Channah and me are raising our hands. We decide to go to Climbing Works again for another training session. I change my clothes and start warming up. Fred isn’t climbing and starts to coach me. He picks boulders and tells me to climb it. At each boulder he looks strict at me. It motivates me if someone is keeping me sharp. I see Nikki training and doing series on the wall. I tell Fred that I quit and join Nikki with series. He says okay, turns around and walks away.
I join Nikki and climb a few series on the wall. I am getting tired and have to catch up. It feels good, finally feels like lead climbing!
In the evening Casper and Michiel fixed dinner for everyone. We had pasta with salmon, spinach with cream sauce for dinner. I enjoyed it. Nikki fixed us another surprise, she made fruit salad for us.
After dinner it was up to me to fix the recorded images from the camera. I managed to hook up the camera and installed some drivers on my notebook. I succeeded and we analyzed the videos from my notebook. Channah also showed us the videos from her camera on her notebook. And then Freddie hooked up his iphone on the tv. We saw ourselves climbing and that was quite interesting.
It was a long day. I feel empty. Everyone is busy at the moment. Freddie is playing on his psp, Michiel watching some movies, Nicky is chatting on skype, Casper is playing with his iphone, Channah was already sleeping, Nikki, Wally, Vera and Marjolein were in another room. I am in our living room and try to finish another story for my webpage. It was a late night for me but I managed to publish my story online!
Today we visited Climbing Works again. Beforehand Wouter arranged that we could train in the morning. Routesetters were already busy at the competition wall.
I warmed up in some fun boulders and started a strength session at the campusboard with Nikki, Channah, Nicky, Vera and Wouter.
Meanwhile Casper, Ferdinand and Michiel were trying some of the final boulder problems. Routesetters were testing their new problems as well.
In the afternoon we went back home for some lunch. After lunch Nikki, Channah, Nicky, Marjolein, Vera, Wouter and me returned to Climbing Works for another training session. We started with a light boulder circuit and conducted some individual strength exercises under supervision by Marjolein.
Back at home Michiel was preparing dinner. Casper, Nikki and Marjolein divided tasks among them and kept themselves busy in the kitchen.
Eventually they served delicious rice with chicken and salade! Credits to all of them.
